When I was sixteen years old the local paper in my town was holding a contest and the theme was 'What I remember about the 80's' all you had to do was write a short list of the things we remember about the 80's the winning contest entry won a $500.00 Gift Certificate for the Newest Bed,Bath and Home Store that had just opened up. Sadly a kid who wasn't even born until 1999 won the contest but was later disqualified because they were under age and not even old enough to remember the 80's. Since I was runner up, I was officially declared the winner with my list of things I remembered most about the 80's.
My List of things I remember about the 80's:
10: The CLOTHES! Oh god The CLOTHES!
9: The Lingo: Surf's Up Dude! Coolio? Seriously? Hang ten? Totally Retro?
8: The Music! You could understand the lyrics to the song without a dictionary or having
them in front of you unlike today's music where you need a dictionary and a thesaurus.
7: The Relaxed style of parenting-parents of 80's babies didn't give a shit where we went
as long as we returned home safely before supper.
6: The Cartoons! I always watched Inspector Gadget,He-Man,She-Rah and the Care Bears
before I went to school
5: The phones! God danged rotary dial! The last four digits of my phone number were 9911
try doing THAT on a rotary dial phone! God was I ever happy when push buttons were
invented!
4: The HAIR! Oh my god! Ever wondered how the Ozone layer got a hole in it? Ask mom about
how many cans of aerosol hair spray she used to tease her hair every day.
3: The SIZE of the Microwaves back then was ridiculously HUGE!
2: The sheer and utter insistence by parents and teachers that we children use proper
grammar and proper pronunciation! Oh the number of times I was chided for dropping the
'ing' off of words that ended with 'ing'
1: The Debut of The Young and the Restless in 1989! Boy I remember those years when school
was out at 3:45 P.M and I got in the door at 4:30 P.M. and mom and all the older girls
were in the living room watching the Young and the Restless Victor and Nikki's FIRST
marriage and being told 'You're way too young to be watching this! Do you not have
homework to do? Then go to the study room, get it out and get started on it! The sooner
it's done the sooner you can have free time.
